An Early Morning Stretch for Early Risers

Everyday I read the Early to Rise Newsletter, that is often great articles.

This one caught my eye this week.

An Early Morning Stretch for Early Risers
By Suzanne Richardson

It isn’t easy to leap out of bed in the morning to get an early start on your day - even for those of us who are committed to the Early to Rise way of life. Jasmine Tarkeshi, cofounder of Laughing Lotus Yoga Center in New York City, has a “wake-up” stretch that will help. Do it before you climb out of bed - gently at first, to avoid straining your back.

Kneel with your knees together and stretch your arms out behind you, hands on the bed, facing away from you.

Inhale, arching your back and lifting your hips.

Exhale from your navel. (According to Tarkeshi, this “wakes up” the digestive system.)
Inhale again. Then, exhaling, sweep your arms in front of you as you lean forward, touching your forehead to the bed and extending your arms in front of you. (In yoga, this is called the “child’s pose.”)

Repeat the stretch two or three times, raising the tempo each time. Then take a moment to calm your breathing. You should feel a nice stretch in your waist, shoulders, and back. And you’ll be ready to face the day.
